I Corinthians 9-11 Paul defends his apostleship and then shares that he gives up his rights in order to advance the gospel. What are some of the rights that he gave up? In chapter 10, Paul says that Old Testament history was written for our instruction (verse 11). How does this teaching then lead into the directive not to participate in the idol worship through idolatrous meals? Note how 10:23-33 provides a great summary of Paul's example of giving up his rights (see chapter 9) for the cause of the gospel. Chapter 11 deals with the roles and respect of a husband and wife and public worship and then propriety in partaking of communion (the Lord's supper). Remember that back then the taking of communion often included a full meal that was shared by all.

Read I Corinthians 11:17-34. In the first century, Communion (the Lord's Supper) was often part of a full meal shared by all believers. What did some do that humiliated others? How does someone eat the bread or drink the cup in an unworthy manner? What are the consequences that sometimes happen if someone does this? Why would the Lord discipline us like that?

Psalm 88:1-2 O LORD, God of my salvation; I cry out day and night before you. Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry!
The Psalmist seems to pray all day long. Request of the Lord a moment-by-moment sense of His presence and an ability to be in an attitude of prayer all day long. Ask that your prayers will be continuous, in the sense of how a hacking cough is "all the time."
